As we know, dinosaur was born during the Triassic period (the period before the Jurassic). The Permian - Triassic Extinction Event made 95% species of creature on the earth went gone, 96% of aquatic and 70% of terrestrial animals, and it was the only extinction of insect. The huge extinction made the oxygen very low after the Permian. (In fact the oxygen is really low in the whole Triassic and Jurassic) Dinosaurs as the creatures born in Triassic, they have to improve their lung or breathing system to make them survive in this environment. That made the air sac appeare in the dinosaurs breathing system. This evolution was really needed in that condition.

The air sac is a container in side of the dinosaur and birds. It before the lung and used for containing some of the fresh air. As the Mamals, like human beings, we just can exchange the air in our lung once duiring a breathing, but the dinosaur can do it twice, cause of the air sac. It improves the efficency of the air exchange, and makes them can live in the low oxygen environment. That’s why the Mammals could not rule the Jurassic and the Cretaceoues period. The oxygen was very low during the whole Mesozoic Era(Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceoues period). After that, the oxygen improved until now. If the oxygen is still low like Jurassic, I will say the human beings may not the ruler of this period. The breathing system of mammals could not rule the Jurassic and Cretaceous period with that low oxygen.
